Community shares
Membership keeps the shop rooted in the community
Woodgate Community Shop is open and serving Woodgate, Pease Pottage and the surrounding neighbourhood. By purchasing community shares in the shop, members help keep it community-owned, locally run and accountable to the people who use it.
What are community shares?
Community shares are a method of raising finance used by communities across the country to save or create businesses that are important to local people. They are a form of withdrawable, non-transferable share capital uniquely available to co-operative and community benefit societies.
How do shares work?
Membership starts at £10, and shares are available up to £5,000. However much you choose to put in, every member has the same voting rights: one member, one vote. Shares are a long-term investment in the shop and entitle members to take part in society decisions, including voting at the annual general meeting.

How the shop is set up
We are a registered society for the benefit of the community
As a registered society for the benefit of the community, Woodgate Community Shop exists to serve local people and reinvest in its community purpose, rather than to create private profit for shareholders.
Members have a say in the society, including voting at the annual general meeting, on a one member, one vote basis.
